A Chicken and Egg Situation

16/07/2026

Do you think we’re shaped more by our experiences or by who we are?

It’s tempting to look at this in a nature vs nurture framework. However, I did that recently so I am taking a different approach. I argue that the two influence each other so much that it’s virtually impossible to separate them.

When I look back at the experiences I have had as an adult, specifically those I had a significant influence on in terms of decision making, accepting the job offer or planning my next unexpected move were governed by who I had become. Once I was in those situations my reactions were governed by my personality. Yes, the same personality that made me decide to take on those challenges in the first place! Have I ever done things that were out of character? Of course I have, but I could always pinpoint the reason why. Also, when I have made that type of decision I have always reverted to my guiding principles to make sense of it and either changed my approach or the situation itself. I know that throughout my adult life, the centre of everything was my personality, which governed both my situations and my reactions to them. It’s led me along a difficult path at times but it’s never led me to disaster, at least not yet 🤔😂
