The Life of the Domestic Cat

15/07/2026

If you had to be an animal for a week, which one would you be and why?

I would quite happily be a cat for a week as they are my favourite animals. However, I wouldn’t want to be a stray. I would want a nice safe place to retreat to when I wanted to relax. Food and drink on demand would obviously be a requirement together with servants to provide it. It’s amazing that we think we own cats when it’s actually the other way around. Cats own our hearts and homes and change our lives. When we have them we have to make sure someone is there to look after them if we go on holiday. When we go out for the day we make sure they will be fine until everyone is back.

In our house, Albus is very much the centre around which we revolve, or at least that’s the case for me. I get up for him in the night when he scratches the carpet and look after his food and drink. If I don’t do my job with the usual accuracy Albus will tell me! Cats are, contrary to popular belief, very loving creatures. They aren’t as needy or as time consuming as dogs and they aren’t as overtly affectionate. Their affection is subtle and very much worth the effort in securing. When anyone in the house is unwell or upset Albus will sit with them more than usual.

Our garden used to be a thoroughfare for local cats but we don’t see as many as we used to. As a result, Albus now relaxes in his garden as easily as he does in his house. He has pretty much the ideal life for a cat and I would happily swap places for a week.
