A Sentimental Journey

29/10/2026

What’s one thing you own that holds deep sentimental value?

I have always owned items that have deep sentimental value throughout my life. As a child it was books, cuddly toys and souvenirs, and to be honest very little has changed although the items have changed over time. The most sentimental time of the year for me is Christmas as any regular followers of this blog will know, and the same decorations come out year after year. Our Christmas house looks very similar year after year, even if I have bought something new to add to the decorations.

This blog post will not look at a specific item but at the mindset behind it. Some people just see objects as functional or decorative and attach no greater meanings to them. For me, so many items have stories. It might be the person who bought it for me who may no longer be in my life, it might be a memory it evokes, it might be a holiday or occasion it reminds me of and often it can be the long lasting nature of an item that becomes  part of the surroundings. Whatever it is, it has become something whose meaning has become over and above it’s appearance or financial value. I have favourite cups, specific tins for tea, coffee, sugar and hot chocolate! Our porridge is in a 100th anniversary Weetbix tin for the New Zealand All Blacks Rugby Team, our Weetabix is in a Cricket Australia tin. I picked up both when we lived in Australia and visited New Zealand between 2003 and 2005, and every time I see them they remind me of a great experience for the whole family.
