A Lesson to Learn
If aliens arrived tomorrow, what’s the first thing you’d ask them?
I can think of any number of answers to this question, some of which are flippant and some of which would get me in trouble! However, I know what serious question I would ask them if they did exist (let alone arrive here after millenia of travelling across space) which I beg leave to dismiss as more than a fleeting possibility.
My question would be, ‘How did your society create interstellar travel?’
I would ask this because for any species to be able to develop that technology they would have to either be a dictatorship or a truly enlightened society. If they were the former they would be very dangerous to us. If they were the latter they could change things for us for the better. To be fair they could of course lie, but if they were telling the truth we would know how to relate to them.
Maybe they could give us a path for the future or they could seal our fate and, inadvertently, help the planet. Either way I would be content! Of course, I can never see this happening as I am sure they don’t exist, or if they do they do not exist beyond the size of microbes.
