Let us now praise: BBC Four
This is the first time I have tried reblogging an article but I just thought it was so good I really had to. If, like me, you enjoy old programmes take a read and you will end up agreeing with every word.

Much as i love the varied repeats on BBC FOUR, i yearn for the days when it also had some original programming. But that article is spot on: culture has been dumbed down in recent years, with the public at large seemingly distrusting anything “clever” or remotely intellectual. So we are now drowning in a sea of reality tv, talent shows, and “celebrities” who are famous for nothing more than being on Love Island or similarly vapid shows. Sad.

I think the reason I took to Celebrity Traitors was because it had intelligent people and they weren’t expected to dumb themselves down.

I am no longer the fan of the BBC I was and almost feel like scrapping the licence fee. BBC Four is ok and I listen to BBC 6 Music on long car journeys (which only come around a few times a year). Radio 4 is nice if I want to pretend I live in a world which doesn’t exist. Even so, most of the time I don’t bother with the BBC at all. In some ways, the gems it offers me are kind of enough as there is nothing really like any of these offerings elsewhere. Overall, at times, it still can be really good and I’d be really sad to see it go. At the same time, much of the output is now moronic and the current affairs/news is not really as unbiased as they claim (at the end of the day it is sponsored by the British establishment). If they halved the fee then I think that woulfd be fair. As things stand I can see it being abolished, which would be sad really. Bringing back the ethos of these old shows would be welcome in any case.

It has lost its way so badly but there are still gems like Celebrity Traitors. That was pure alchemy but most of the time it just doesn’t seem to try. It has lost sport, documentaries, music and news. Such a shame.
